Biography

Walter William Skeat (1835–1912; Oxford DNB); philologist. Elected to the new Elrington and Bosworth professorship of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge in 1878. Edited a range of works including Chaucer and Anglo-Saxon texts, and also published textbooks promoting the study of the English language. Appointed a Vice-President of the Society of Authors.
