Payn, James (1830–1898; Oxford DNB), novelist and journal editor. Editor of Chambers's Journal from 1859–1874 and Cornhill Magazine from 1883–1896; also published fiction and criticism in various periodicals. Appointed a Vice-President of the Society of Authors.
