Sir Henry Parkes (1815–1896; Oxford DNB); politician and journalist in Australia. Emigrated to New South Wales in 1839, becoming involved in liberal politics in the 1840s; first became premier in 1872, holding the position five times. Founded the newspaper The Empire (1850–58); also published poetry, travel writing and autobiographical writings. Appointed a Vice-President of the Society of Authors.
