Management was voluntary and unpaid, and there was a separate Council for the Syndicate. The Syndicate's services were, initially, only available to members of the Society. Run by William Morris Colles, it was based on the same floor as the Society of Authors' own offices in Portugal Street. In 1898, there was a split between the Society and the Syndicate, dissolving the partnership entirely after a series of problems with Colles' running of the organisation.
