Richard Garnett (1835–1906;
Oxford DNB); librarian and author. Joined the British Museum as an assistant librarian in 1851, becoming superintendent of the Reading Room in 1881 and Keeper of Printed Books in 1890. Published essays in the
Literary Gazette,
The Examiner, and the
Manchester Guardian, edited by his uncle Jeremiah Garnett; also published poetry, and contributed 196 articles to the
Dictionary of National Biography. Also published books on history, and collaborated with
Edmund Gosse on the first two volumes of
English Literature: an Illustrated Record (1903).
